Your Practice

  • Begin on String Set 1 with the major triad shapes.

  • Choose a Root note and locate each voicing of the major triad across one octave from the lowest available voicing (whichever is closest to the guitar headstock).

  • Keep changing your Root note, preferably working through all 12 chromatic notes (I like to work in fourths…that would be C, F, Bb, Eb, Ab, C#, F#, B, E, A, D, G, C…look counterclockwise around The Circle of Fifths)

  • The same exercise can then be applied to the minor triad voicings (and the diminished if you’re feeling particularly motivated!)

  • Once confident with that, try and play along to a song or common progression using triad shapes. As you do so, remember that wherever you start you will always be able to find all the triads nearby.

Feel free to email me with any questions. I’m always happy to help!
